One thing you want to be careful of, when developing and writing a pilot is not to get too far ahead of yourself. It’s definitely good to know where your series is going…especially over the course of the first season. But, often — and usually with serialized dramas — I read the pilot script and I am totally confused. I tell the writer that I don&t really understand what’s going on. The stock answer seems to be, “Don&t worry, I’m going to reveal that in Season 5, episode 2. Then you’ll get it.” What the writer doesn&t seem to comprehend is that if the pilot isn&t rock solid — if it’s too confusing — there won&t even be a Season 1. Why? Because there won&t be an episode 1. The pilot won&t be produced if the script doesn&t make sense. So don&t waste a lot of time planning out what’s going to happen each week for the next ten years. Instead focus on telling a compelling story through complex and interesting characters.
